Large-scale Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect: Measuring Statistical Properties with Multifrequency Maps
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the prospects for extracting detailed statistical properties of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect associated with large scale structure using upcoming multifrequency CMB experiments. The greatest obstacle to detecting the large-angle signal is the confusion noise provided by the primary anisotropies themselves, and to a lesser degree galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. We employ multifrequency subtraction techniques and the latest foregrounds models to determine the detection threshold for the Boomerang, MAP (several μK) and Planck CMB (sub μK) experiments. Calibrating a simplified biasedtracer model of the gas pressure off recent hydrodynamic simulations, we estimate the SZ power spectrum, skewness and bispectrum through analytic scalings and N-body simulations of the dark matter. We show that the Planck satellite should be able to measure the SZ effect with sufficient precision to determine its power spectrum and higher order correlations, e.g. the skewness and bispectrum. Planck should also be able to detect the cross correlation between the SZ and gravitational lensing effect in the CMB. Detection of these effects will help determine the properties of the as yet undetected gas, including the manner in which the gas pressure traces the dark matter. Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect: Large scale structure correlation
I discuss the correlation between the late-time integrated Sachs-Wolfe ~ISW! effect in the cosmic microwave background ~CMB! temperature anisotropies and the large scale structure of the local universe. This correlation has been proposed and studied in the literature as a probe of the dark energy and its physical properties. I consider a variety of large scale structure tracers suitable for a d...
متن کاملReconstructing Sunyaev–Zel’dovich clusters in future cosmic microwave background experiments
We present a new method for component separation aimed at extracting Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) galaxy clusters from multifrequency maps of cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. This method is designed to recover non-Gaussian, spatially localized and sparse signals. We first characterize the cluster non-Gaussianity by studying it on simulated SZ maps. We then apply our estimator on simula...
متن کاملFiltering techniques for the detection of Sunyaev - Zel ’ dovich clusters in multifrequency CMB maps
The problem of detecting Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) clusters in multifrequency CMB observations is investigated using a number of filtering techniques. A multifilter approach is introduced, which optimizes the detection of SZ clusters on microwave maps. An alternative method is also investigated, in which maps at different frequencies are combined in an optimal manner so that existing filtering te...
متن کاملCross-correlating Sunyaev–Zel’dovich and weak lensing maps
We present novel statistical tools to cross-correlate frequency cleaned thermal Sunyaev– Zel’dovich (tSZ) maps and tomographic weak lensing (wl) convergence maps. Moving beyond the lowest order cross-correlation, we introduce a hierarchy of mixed higher order statistics, the cumulants and cumulant correlators, to analyse non-Gaussianity in real space, as well as corresponding polyspectra in the...
متن کاملThe Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect
The Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect causes a change in the apparent brightness of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation towards a cluster of galaxies or any other reservoir of hot plasma. Measurements of the effect provide distinctly different information about cluster properties than X-ray imaging data, while combining X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect data leads to new insights into the struc...
